What is an acquired brain injury?

If you receive a brain injury after birth, it’s called an acquired brain injury. This can be caused as a result of infections such as meningitis, encephalitis, damage caused by an illness such as a stroke, a haemorrhage or a tumour, all of which affect the way in which the brain functions.

What are the effects of an acquired brain injury?

The majority of people that go into hospital with a head injury experience no lasting effects, but a few can be affected severely.
