£2m award for leg and spinal injuries in motorbike accident

We achieved a significant award for our client, Nigel Dicker, who was injured when a car pulled out of a side road and drove into him whilst he was on his motorbike.

He sustained devastating injuries to his left leg and back and continues to suffer from severe pain. He also suffered serious psychological injuries that required psychiatric treatment.

Nigel still finds the pain difficult to tolerate. He was one of the first patients ever to be fitted with an implanted spinal cord stimulator but unfortunately it only had a minimal impact on pain levels described as ‘overwhelming’ by the pain specialist.

The evidence we obtained from experts in a variety of medical disciplines confirmed that Nigel would never be able to work again, and he would require substantial care, assistance and equipment for the rest of his life. Court proceedings were issued and the defendant admitted liability but  did not initially agree how much compensation should be paid to Nigel.

Whilst the claim continued in court we were able to obtain a number of interim payments to assist with Nigel’s immediate rehabilitation costs:

  • £549,000 was paid immediately to meet the cost of treatment and therapy,
  • a further £40,000 for the spinal cord stimulator procedure,
  • £500,000.00 to fund further recommended surgery and to purchase and adapt a property for Nigel.

The defendant proposed a figure of £2m to settle the claim and this was accetped by Nigel.  This figure included the interim payments already made, which meant Nigel could use the additional compensation to assist with future costs of care, additional treatment and living.
