Kashmir Uppal ‘Partner of the Year’ at Birmingham Legal Awards

09 March 2018

Kashmir Uppal, a specialist medical negligence solicitor and partner in Shoosmiths national clinical negligence team since May 2016, won the prestigious accolade of ‘Partner of the Year’ at last night’s Birmingham Law Society Legal Award event in Birmingham’s International Convention Centre.

Kashmir Uppal wins partner of the year 2018 awardThe Birmingham Law Society Legal Awards have been showcasing the very best legal talent since the inaugural event in 2002. Now in their 17th year, the awards celebrate the success and achievement of both individuals and regional firms over the last 12 months.

Kashmir Uppal has a wealth of experience in dealing with complex medical negligence claims and winning the 'Partner of the Year' title reinforces the assessment of her skills by both the Legal 500 (who described her as ‘handling pressure effortlessly’) and by Chambers which highlighted her expertise in dealing with large party/group actions against negligent surgeons.

It was her efforts in this area in particular that made Kashmir stand out for the judges among competition that included Trowers & Hamlins LLP and DLA Piper UK LLP. Kashmir was instrumental in bringing convicted rogue breast surgeon Ian Paterson to justice and was regarded by many as the ‘lead solicitor’ in the case since she was first instructed to act on behalf of one of his former patients in 2010.

Her tireless pursuit of the truth about Paterson’s practice and her consistent support of his many victims, championing their cause in several media appearances, convinced the judges that Kashmir has amply demonstrated her suitability for the accolade and had indeed made a positive contribution to the reputation of partners and the legal profession during 2017.

Kashmir herself continues to express her surprise and gratitude for winning the award, but perhaps the most telling and heartfelt endorsement comes from Lesley Cuthbert. Lesley is one of the many clients Kashmir represented throughout the claim on behalf of those Paterson injured in private practice. She commented:

‘Kashmir thoroughly deserves this award. She was absolutely fantastic. Her support was incredible and if it wasn’t for her hard work, what Paterson did may never have come to light. I cannot thank her enough for all that she did. She will always be Partner of the Year as far as I am concerned and I know many of Paterson’s victims share that opinion.’
