Inquest finds breathing tube problems led to death of Maureen Robson

HM Coroner, Mr Geraint Urias Williams, concluded that, Mrs Robson 'died as a consequence of a known, albeit rare, complication of surgery.'

Victoria Blankstone, a specialist medical negligence lawyer at Shoosmiths Birmingham office said:

'Mrs Robson’s family have been left absolutely devastated by her sudden death following displacement of a tracheostomy tube after what was a successful 11 hour operation. This is a very difficult time for them. Whilst the inquest has gone some way in providing answers to the many questions they had, and the Trust have made the necessary changes to their policy regarding the care of patients who have tracheostomies inserted, the family remain concerned about the care she received shortly before she died.'

Mrs Robson’s son, Simon, added:

'My mother was determined to undergo this extensive surgery to remove the cancer so she could return to her normal active life. It is a tragedy that the treatment being so successful then went so disastrously wrong with the tracheostomy tube.'

Victoria concluded:

'We will continue to work with the family as they come to terms with this tragedy, as well as investigate Mrs Robson’s death further to help them understand exactly what happened'.

Inquest seeks clarity about breathing tube problems leading to death

An inquest into the death of Maureen Robson (77) is to be held before HM Coroner Mr GU Williams.

The inquest will start at 10.00 am on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 February 2019 at Stourport Coroner’s Court, The Civic, Martins Way, Stourport upon Severn, Worcestershire DY13 8UN.

Mrs Robson died on 7 November 2017 following surgery at the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. Victoria Blankstone, a senior associate solicitor in Shoosmiths specialising in medical negligence cases, represents the family at inquest.

Maureen Robson, deceased due to medical negligence
