Event highlights asbestos as a continuing concern

03 April 2017

In Global Asbestos Awareness Week 2017, Asbestos Awareness & Support Cymru (AASC) is holding an event to raise awareness of the problems faced by those affected by asbestos related illnesses and launch the charity’s Future Generations Project.

Shoosmiths supports the work of Asbestos Awareness and Support Cymru (AASC) and has been a sapphire sponsor of the charity since January 2016. The AASC aims to guide victims of asbestos disease and their families towards the help they need from health, social care and legal professionals in the statutory, voluntary and private sectors.

This Future Generations initiative is aimed at raising  awareness of the dangers of asbestos amongst children and young people, the risks involved, mistakes made in the past, associated illnesses and how to care and support for people with asbestos related diseases.

Chaired by Mick Antoniw AM, the member of the Welsh Assembly who is particularly active in asbestos-related health campaigns, the event will also be attended by Garret Spring and Kate Price, experts with Shoosmiths specialising in asbestos-related illnesses such as mesothelioma and other industrial diseases.

Shoosmiths commented:

‘We are delighted to be sponsors of this charity and further strengthen our commitment to support the great work that the voluntary sector does to help victims of asbestos-related illnesses and their families. Our ongoing commitment helps AASC to signpost the support that victims of asbestos-related illnesses so desperately need. Their Future Generations project also indicates that asbestos-related cancers and illnesses are not just a problem of the industrial past and continuing awareness of the dangers is just as vital today as it was decades ago when these cases first began to emerge.’

Since a House of Lords ruling in 2007, the courts have held that employers should have known exposing their employees to even low levels of asbestos dust created a significant health risk.
For well over half a century, and certainly from the mid-1960s at least, precautions should have been put in place and protective equipment issued by employers.

Full details of the event, being held at The Senedd (Oriel), Cardiff Bay, CF10 4PZ on Wednesday 5th April, from 12.00-2.00 pm can be obtained by emailing [email protected] or by calling 01495 272479.
