Shoosmiths will host an evening seminar on legal issues for youngsters with special educational needs aimed at professionals handling clinical negligence and serious personal injury cases.

The seminar will run on Wednesday, 14 November 2018 (4pm – 6pm) at the Shoosmiths offices, Shoosmiths LLP, 6th Floor, 2 Colmore Square, 38 Colmore Circus, Queensway, Birmingham, B4 6SH.

Recognised expertise and experience

Hosted by Victoria Federico, who heads Shoosmiths’ education law team, the event is free of charge and includes refreshments. Victoria is a recognised leading specialist in this area of law. She was one of only three education solicitors asked to comment on the draft of the definitive guide to SEN Law produced by David Wolfe QC of Matrix Chambers (regularly cited by the legal directories as a ‘leading barrister in this area’) and equally eminent education barrister Leon Glenister of Landmark Chambers.

Victoria has hosted several such seminars previously, aimed at concerned parents and members of the public. It was at one such event that Claire Gerring first became aware of the rights of her son Oscar to receive the appropriate level of support which led to Claire seeking Victoria’s advice at appeal to the SEND Tribunal.

The education law team is also heavily involved in securing ongoing education provision for many of the firm’s young clients, for whom medical negligence specialists have achieved significant compensation for avoidable cerebral palsy, such as James Robshaw and more recently Holly Greenhow.

Why you should attend

Specialist lawyers and firms acting for children and young people who have suffered birth and brain injuries may require assistance to ensure their clients get the right education. This support will need to be detailed in an Education Health and Care plan (EHCP), but those lawyers, while more than competent in their own particular specialism, may lack knowledge or expertise in the complex area of SEN law and provision.

Victoria says:

‘We are one of the very few law practices in the country with education law expertise embedded within the firm and already work very closely with our medical negligence and serious personal injury teams. Our expertise forms the basis of training we can offer fellow professionals and will cover the legal process, ensuring that the content of the EHCP is correct and legally enforceable.’

Victoria also explained how Shoosmiths can add value to other firm’s services using her team’s expert assistance, but stresses that, should that be the case, that firm’s client would remain their client.

Those interested in attending should contact Victoria Federico on 03700 868 469 or email her – [email protected] – or by completing the form below. Victoria can also be contacted should anyone be interested in receiving notes and copies of the presentation.
